Open source – the key to digital sovereignty and sustainable AI

The future of AI will not be decided by the next model release, but by the question of openness and control. Closed systems promise short-term efficiency but create long-term dependencies. Open source provides a counterbalance with transparent models that make auditability, decision logic, and security verifiable. In this issue, we show why open source is becoming increasingly important far beyond AI, enabling organizations to regain control over technological development, costs, security, and data flows.

The 70 % reality check: Agentic AI is live in banking – governance isn’t there yet

AI Agents // Agentic AI has moved from pilots to production. Roughly seven in ten institutions now run agents that don’t just recommend, but also act. Yet control frameworks often trail capabilities, creating exposure on auditability, accountability, and third-party concentration. The prize is real; so are the risks.

“Digital sovereignty has become a marketing concept”

Sovereignty debate // There is no such thing as total digital independence. However, poorly managed dependencies can make Switzerland unable to act. Christian Laux, Vice President of the Swiss Data Alliance, explains how the increasingly overloaded concept of digital sovereignty can be defined more precisely. He also discusses why examining real dependencies is more important than engaging in ideological debates, and considers which measures will strengthen Switzerland’s ability to act.

Added business value without compromising on digital sovereignty

Enterprise Open Source // Although AI applications have been widely popularized, a recent survey by Red Hat reveals that only 16 percent of Swiss companies get a return on their AI investment. Indeed, only three percent reported having generated added value for their customers from it. At the same time, digital sovereignty in the use of AI is a priority for 77 percent of respondents.
