Open Banking is the general term for a standardized exchange of financial data between banks, financial institutions, and companies, with the objective of removing silos of information between organizations and ultimately improving the customer experience. With the launch of the centralized API platform bLink, SIX has taken a meaningful step toward building a standardization approach for Swiss banks. Banks and third-party providers need only sign a single participant contract with SIX instead of negotiating a number of individual agreements. SIX also handles the unified verification of participants for admission to the data exchange.

How Open Banking works

Your Open Banking implementation

When it comes to open banking, you as a bank can be on the provider side or the consumer side. As a provider, you can share and receive the data at your disposal on a selective basis (PSS). As a consumer, you can request data from third parties and, if necessary, initiate actions to be carried out by the third parties.

The provider side

As a provider bank in an Open Banking ecosystem, you can share account and transaction data with third parties and receive payment orders. This can take place intraday or at end of day.
As a provider you can also enable your customers to share the data you hold for them as a bank, such as account or portfolio data.
TPPs send requests to you for data or that you need to act upon, such as a payment order or trading order.
The customer and the bank decide which account the data is shared from.
Through Consent Management the customer can decide for which accounts and portfolios they wish to share data.

The consumer side

As a consumer bank in an Open Banking ecosystem, you can receive and aggregate data from other banks.
The data is always shared in a customer context, meaning that a customer shares data from accounts with bank A and bank B.
A customer is therefore able to have an overview of their assets through one single point of entry.

Consent management

Consent management enables the customer and the bank to manage TPP access to the bank’s data. The customer and the bank can choose which accounts are exposed to outside access.

What data can be shared

Account and securities account information

Customers can share an array of data with regard to their accounts and portfolios, including account balances, account transactions and statements, portfolio positions and valuations.

This data will be shared in a secure way with the third party systems using the standardized APIs.

Payment and stock market orders

Customers can enter payment and stock market orders directly in their third-party system (e.g. accounting system) and initiate them in e-banking with a single click.
